Identify the connection part

Ferrules organize fine-stranded wire ends; insulated terminals include ring, fork and splice forms; machined contacts belong to a connector system. Similar shapes or colours do not establish common tooling.

Review the terminal and conductor together

Record terminal family, conductor specification, insulation construction and termination requirements. For ferrules, also distinguish single and twin forms and check the metal sleeve length.

Match tooling to the complete combination

Jaw profile, positioning accessories and adjustment conditions all affect suitability. Start with the terminal manufacturer documentation and then review the confirmed scope of the tool.

Work backwards from the interface

Identify whether the mating side is a terminal opening, stud or blade, then choose the terminal construction. Check conductor area, insulation diameter and metal dimensions before selecting the tool. This separates interface selection from crimping and avoids forcing a terminal into tooling already at hand. Retain part numbers and dimensional differences for substitutes.

Single, twin and multiple-conductor combinations

A twin ferrule is for its accepted wire combinations, not arbitrary pairs. Review conductor areas, jacket sizes and terminal entry together. Forcing a second wire into a single ferrule or removing strands changes the intended conditions. Multiple-wire joining needs an appropriate connection architecture rather than improvised stacking.

Create a reusable selection record

Record the interface, wire, terminal, tool, stripping conditions and checks together. After sample review, reuse the combination under the same conditions. Changes in wire construction, terminal source or die can then be assessed against the record. Family comparisons narrow selection but do not replace component instructions.
