A closer look

What PEX connection tools do

PEX is a common abbreviation for cross-linked polyethylene tubing. A tubing-and-fitting combination requires a compatible connection method; the tool performs the relevant ring compression, clamp closure or expansion. Common approaches include copper-ring crimping, stainless-steel clamping, cold expansion and push-to-connect fittings. These can serve similar piping tasks while using different components, tools and inspection methods.

LIHENGRIX LH-X20 addresses copper-ring PEX crimping. A ring surrounds the tube, and the tool compresses it circumferentially to form the specified tube-to-insert connection. This differs from closing an ear clamp or expanding a tube end. Sharing the PEX application does not make the tools interchangeable.

Treat tubing, fitting, ring and tool as a combination

PEX-A, PEX-B and PEX-C refer to manufacturing classifications, not promises of universal fitting compatibility. Select a method from the tubing marking, fitting system and supplier instructions. In particular, cold expansion requires tubing, reinforcing ring and fitting compatibility; a PEX marking alone is insufficient.

Nominal inch tube size is not the same as actual outside diameter. Metric products also need their stated dimension system. A useful selection brief identifies tubing, fitting series, ring type and die size together. “For water pipe” or a nominal size alone does not define the full combination.

Preparing and checking a copper-ring connection

  1. Cut and inspect: prepare an even end and check for damage, contamination or distortion that affects fit.
  2. Assemble and position: follow the system instructions for ring and fitting placement; do not borrow distances from another system.
  3. Arrange the tool: use the matched crimp size, seat the jaws around the ring and allow sufficient operating clearance.
  4. Complete the stroke: follow the tool procedure without tilting the jaws or moving the ring during formation.
  5. Check the joint: apply the specified visual and gauge checks. Follow the system rework method for unacceptable joints.
  6. Accept the system: perform the required project and system tests after joint inspection. Ring appearance does not replace piping acceptance.

Application and tool care

Domestic hot/cold water, internal equipment piping and other uses differ in medium, temperature, pressure and environment. Establish the permitted system application before considering site access. A joining method described here does not automatically authorize use with gas, compressed air or every chemical medium.

Care centers on the jaw closure area, moving joints and dimensional check condition. Debris, damage or closure deviations can affect ring formation. After a drop, unusual jam or maintenance, check the tool by its specified procedure. Arbitrary adjustment to make a poor joint pass a gauge is not an acceptance method.

Common questions

Can a copper-ring crimper close a stainless clamp?

The forming location and force application differ. Use the tooling specified for the clamp construction.

Does passing a gauge finish the inspection?

A gauge checks its defined dimensions. Insertion, component compatibility, system testing and project acceptance remain separate checks.
