Housing and contact have different roles

The housing organizes and protects connections, while termination occurs between a contact and conductor. The housing family alone often does not identify a tool match.

Locate the contact documentation

Record the contact family, conductor requirements and termination method before selecting tooling. Crimp, screw and other termination styles follow their own documentation.

The locator belongs to the tool combination

A positioning accessory helps locate a contact inside the tool. The relationship between tool, contact and accessory must come from matched documentation rather than an image.

Why retention matters after crimping

After wire-to-contact crimping, the contact must be retained correctly by the insulating carrier. Incorrect orientation, cavity or seating can prevent mating. Wire retention in the contact and contact retention in the housing are separate checks. Use the correct extraction method to protect the retaining features during rework.

Do not mix machined and open-barrel processes

Machined contact barrels and open-barrel wings need different forming processes. Locating, conductor position and die geometry differ. Choosing a substitute solely by wire size misses the terminal construction that determines forming. Start the tooling lookup with the contact part number.

Pinouts, sealing and strain relief

Use a clear pinout and keep wire identification consistent with cavities. Seals, shielding and cable-load transfer require the complete connector instructions. A neat contact crimp does not replace those assembly steps. Retain readable identifiers and component traceability.
